It's HERE! The NEW Spring-Summer 2011 Idea Book!
Oh, I am SO excited to finally be able to share this with you! I have had my new book for about a month now, and have been bursting at the seams with anticipation! Now it's finally here - the Brand New Spring-Summer 2011 Idea Book from Close To My Heart! This bad boy is bigger and better than ever, with 14 more pages than the last Idea Book - and TWICE as many NEW Paper Packs and Workshops On The Go! It's so exciting! If you just can't wait another second to see it, go directly to this link: NEW IDEA BOOK! now to check it out online. If you can wait a few more minutes, I will share with you a few of MY favorite new products from the new Idea Book - perhaps they will become your favorites, too!
My Reflections Level 2 Paper Packs (and Workshops On The Go!):
Sweetheart Paper Pack - The all-over flower pattern is my favorite. It's so beautiful! These papers are perfect, of course, for Valentine's Day, but cheerful and versatile enough to be used everyday!
Miracle Paper Pack - CTMH ran a National Scrapbooking Month special where they featured the "Miracle Scrapbooking Kit" as the promotion. With the kit, you were able to create two 2-page layouts, and it came with two gorgeous patterns of paper and Irresistibles Chipboard die-cuts. Well, lucky for us, the kit must have been pretty popular, because now there is an entire "Miracle" Paper Pack, which includes the two beautiful patterns from the original kit, along with four brand new ones. There's even coordinating stamp sets! I just love the colors and fun patterns!
Mayberry Paper Pack - The colors and patterns in this kit just make me happy! They shout "Spring" to me - and being buried under 4 feet of snow, I could REALLY use some spring right now! And the Mayberry WOTG comes with the most adorable fruit stamp set AND the new Canvas Badge Buttons - you've got to see them!
Stamp Sets:
"Tea Time" - Do I really need to say more? How stinking adorable is this set?!
"Trees & Things" - OK, I really don't know what I'm going to use this set for right now, but I just couldn't resist it! All of those cute things you can put in or hang from the tree(s) - I can't wait to play!
"Universal Backgrounds" - Anyone who's ever been to one of my workshops knows I LOVE background stamps - I have them all! And this one I was particularly excited about because of the script and music note patterns...oh, and the other ones, too! I love them all!
"Card Chatter - Sympathy" - I was happy to finally see a sentiment set devoted to sympathy/thinking of you. It has been very hard to do those types of cards without one, so I snapped this one up first thing. There's also a brand new "Card Chatter - Love" and "Card Chatter - Birthday" - both of which are also on my favorites list!
"Happy Moments" - I can't explain what exactly it is that draws me to this stamp set, but as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to have it. LOVE it!
OK, there are MANY more, but I know you don't want to be reading this all night (or day).
There are also incredible new Kraft Color-Ready Borders - they are 12" long, self-adhesive, and come in 25 different shapes!! (You get 2 of each!). AND new Irrisistibles - "Eclectic Alphabet" and "Villa".
So get over to my website to check out the new Idea Book! Then post your favorites! And don't forget about the new Stamp of the Month, the "Free, Free, & Fabulous" Campaign, and the "Perfect 10" Studio J Campaign going on through the month of February ONLY! See my website http://funforyou.myctmh.com or http://www.closetomyheart.com for all the details!

And The Winner Is...
Well, I got quite a surprise today! Close To My Heart was having a Facebook contest. All one had to do was post artwork that used any product(s) from the January Inspirations Brochure. Since I had already done four cards using the January Stamp of the Month (see post from January 8th), I posted them. Two people were randomly selected, from everyone who posted, to receive the new Bohemian Alphabet stamp set (retailing at $34.95) for free. Well, guess who one of those lucky winners was - ME! This is not only incredible, but extremely coincidental, being that I couldn't decide if I would use that particular stamp set enough to buy it. Now the decision has been made for me! I love it!
For anyone else who'd like to acquire the Bohemian Alphabet, it can be found on page 11 of the Inspirations Brochure, which can be viewed HERE.
Just thought I'd share my exciting news! I will have to share some artwork done with my new set once I have it!!

You know, after so much talk about stamping - stamping techniques and sample artwork - it occurred to me that it might be beneficial to have a lesson on inks. "What's the difference between dye and pigment ink pads?" "Why would I use one over the other?" "Can I use dye-based inks on surfaces other than paper?" These are questions I hear often, so lets delve into the world of ink pads and see if we can't get a few of those questions answered.
To make things easier, faster, and more accurate, I will be quoting the following descriptions directly from "The Rubber Stamper's Bible" by Francoise Read:
Dye-Based Inks
These inks are water-based, mainly non-permanent and usually come with a felt pad. They are available in a variety of colors, including multicolored or "rainbow" pads. Dye-based inks are translucent, dry quickly and can be stamped on most types of paper. However, images do appear brighter and crisper when stamped on white glossy paper.
Pigment Inks
These inks are thick, creamy and opaque, and usually come with a foam pad. They are available in a multitude of sizes and colors. Some colors are available in metallic, pearlescent and chalk finishes. Traditionally, most pigment inks are slow drying, but some have been developed to be faster drying, so it is important to check the label and ask for advice. The drying time will also depend on the weight and texture of the card you use.
Embossing Inks
These inks are usually clear or slightly tinted and most come with a foam pad. They are designed to dry slowly and to be used with opaque colored and metallic embossing powders. If you like embossing, these inkpads are a useful addition. Embossing pens are also available that you can use to color in and emboss a stamped image. Some of these, known as dual embossing pens, have a different tip on either end, such as a brush, bullet, or small and large chisel.
Resist Inks
These inks are formulated to resist or repel water-based dye inks on glossy paper. The VersaMarkTM inkpad can be used to create a watermark or tone-on-tone effect in your stamping. It will also act as a "glue" for chalks and paint powders.
Fabric/Craft Inks
Although some fabric inks are manufactured primarily for use on fabric, types such as FabricoTM and Crafter'sTM are multipurpose craft inks that can also be used on wood, leather, shrink plastic, and unglazed ceramics. When stamping on fabric, heat setting is required and fabrics should be pre-washed to remove sizing.
Permanent/Solvent Inks
Permanent inks are available in both water- and solvent-based forms and can be used on most types of card as well as other surfaces such as wood, acetate, shrink plastic, glass, metal foil, leather and acrylic. Most are ideal for non-porous and semi-porous surfaces. You may need a special stamp cleaner to remove solvent inks from your stamps, and these inks should always be used in a well-ventilated area.
Well, there you have it. I have also posted a scan of the ink comparison chart that is also published in "The Rubber Stamper's Bible". This chart lists many of the industry's leading brands, their ink types, drying times, surfaces best used on, etc. You can access it by clicking HERE.
I hope this has been informative and has answered any questions you may have had regarding ink pads! Happy Stamping!

January SPECIALS and Artwork
Hello there!
I am so excited about the January promotions from Close To My Heart! Have you heard? Close to my Heart is moving to a semi-annual Idea Book starting February 1st. There will be one Idea Book for Spring/Summer (Feb.-July), and one for Autumn/Winter (August-Jan.). Since this year, that leaves this month without an Idea Book, CTMH has come out with the Inspirations brochure - it's a sneak peek at some of the brand new products you'll find in the new Spring/Summer 2011 Idea Book - only at GREAT discounts!
The main attraction is the "Wings" Workshop on the Go (WOTG) Kit. With the purchase of this kit, you can purchase all of the stamp sets in the brochure at a discount! There are 5 - one of each size (A-E). In addition, the gorgeous January Stamp of the Month can be earned for FREE with the purchase of the Wings WOTG Kit and any four additional different items from the brochure - even if they only cost $4.95 a piece! That means that you could end up with the January SOTM for FREE with a less than $50 purchase! You'll never get an opportunity like this again, so DEFINITELY jump onto my website (http://funforyou.myctmh.com), check out the Inspirations Brochure (a link in the lower-right corner of my website), and place your order today!
In the meantime, I thought I would inspire you with the cards I did with the January Stamp of the Month. I just LOVE this set, and you'll soon see why! There are four main images in the set, four single words, and one sentiment which reads, "A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart, and will sing it back to you when you forget the words." I have created one card with each of the main images:
This card also uses the "Lovely Lace" stamp set for the background. (NOTE: "Lovely Lace" is no longer available through a catalog, but it is available to order from my website's Online Shopping.)
I used the "Passages" paper pack for the script background (also only available on my website). You can't see it in this picture, but the butterfly was stamped twice, cut out (I cut the antennae off of one), then one was adhered to the card (the one with the antennae), and the second was adhered on top, but only at the body, so the wings fold up off the card. It's really pretty.
This card uses "Weathered Backgrounds" for the background (available on my website), and "One of a Kind" for the leaves (a current stamp set). After stamping the leaves on the white tag, I decided it was way too busy, so I layered a piece of vellum on top to soften it up a bit.
This card is only 3" x 3" - a note or gift card. I dry embossed the dot pattern into the background papers using the Sizzix Texture Boutique and "Swiss Dots" embossing folder from Cuttlebug/Provo Craft. Then I added some Sparkles to the shoe for some bling.
Well, there you have it! I hope you get as inspired as I did by this set! Remember, after this month, it's GONE! So don't wait to get it!!
Have a great weekend!

Christmas Card Do-Over
The holidays are over - I hope everyone had a wonderful one! I received lots of beautiful Christmas cards this year - I love getting cards in the mail! There was one in particular, from my mother & father-in-law, that when I saw it, my first thought was, "I could do that!" Have you ever seen something in a store - a card, or article of clothing, or home decor item - and you've found yourself thinking that you could do that yourself? Well, that's what we're going to do today - a Christmas card do-over. Let's start by seeing the original card:
Isn't that pretty? And pretty simple when you really look at it. The first thing I needed to do was choose my papers. I really like Close To My Heart's "Mistletoe" paper pack, so I decided I would use that:
Here are the three papers I chose to use. The one on the left will be the small tree, the one in the middle will be the card's base, and the one on the right will be the striped paper that the trees are mounted to. Now, in order to create the main tree image with the star, I chose to use a flourish stamp and the clear embossing resist technique. This is how it worked:
First, I needed to create a mask for my tree shape.
After I had the mask cut out of regular copy paper, I placed a piece of light green cardstock behind it (in this case, Sweet Leaf from CTMH):
Next, I used an embossing ink and stamped my flourish image onto the green cardstock through the mask. This way, the image would be imprinted only on my tree shape, making it easier to trim out later:
After stamping the image, cover it with clear embossing powder and heat emboss:
Now, in order to get the light green swirls on a dark green background, I used a sponge and New England Ivy ink and sponged over the entire image:
When you're done it should look like this:
You can add as much or as little ink as you like - I actually decided that the green was not dark enough, so I went back with some Olive ink as well to try & darken it up a bit. When you're done inking, wipe over the image with a paper towel to pick up any ink that may be on the clear embossing. The embossing resists the ink, letting the cardstock underneath show through. Now you will trim the embossed triangle out.
The next step will be to create the border/mount for the embossed tree. In order to do that, I took my original mask and traced it very lightly onto a piece of Colonial White cardstock, being sure to leave room at the top for the star. I stamped a star image with embossing ink and embossed the image with gold embossing powder:
Now you can trim around the traced outline and the star, leaving about 1/8" around, then erase the outline:
The embossed tree can then be adhered to the middle of this piece:
The second, smaller tree is a simple trim from patterned paper. In order to make it look more like the original, I drew in some dots around the circles with a gold glitter pen. The next piece will be the striped background. The original had a thin gold stripe around the entire border, plus a white scalloped border inside of that. I was able to use a dot border stamp I had and heat emboss the top half of it with white embossing powder to achieve the same look:
Once that was done, all that was left to do was assemble the pieces. Unbelieveably enough, I do not own any gold ribbon, so I used the closest thing I had which was Buttercup ribbon from CTMH. And instead of embossing a sentiment at the bottom of the card, I hand-wrote one with my gold glitter pen. Here is the final result:
Not too shabby, if I do say so myself! When you find yourself thinking, "I can do that" - try it! You may find that you have hidden duplication talents you never knew you had!

30 Random Christmas Questions
The following was posted in the Scrap Girls Newsletter for Monday, December 6, 2010, by Brandie Valenzuela. The responses to the questions have been changed, by me, to reflect my answers, instead of Brandie’s. Feel free to post your answers on my, or your own blog as well!
“Every so often, I get "tagged" to respond to a series of questions about myself. The person who sends it to me has their answers in it, and the instructions tell me to copy and paste the questions, remove their answers, and give my own answers.
I enjoy doing these, so I save them for when I have some spare time. Below are some Christmas questions that were recently sent to me, so I thought this would be a perfect time to answer them for the Scrap Girls Newsletter.”
- Real tree or artificial? Artificial. We tried real for a few years, but finally decided it wasn't worth the trouble... or the mess.
- When do you put up your tree and decorations? Usually the first weekend in December.
- When do you take the tree down? Roundabout the weekend after New Years.
- Eggnog or Hot Chocolate? Hot chocolate, definitely.
- Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail.
- Favorite gift received as a child? That’s a tough one, being that I only remember what I’ve seen in old home movies. So I guess I will say a 3-story Barbie Townhouse.
- Wrapping paper or gift bags? If it can be wrapped, I’ll wrap it. If it’s just too awkward, or I don’t have a box to fit it, I’ll use a bag.
- Do you have a nativity scene? Yes – a porcelain one from Home Interiors that’s very special to me.
- Hardest person to buy for? My brother.
- Easiest person to buy for? My daughter.
- Favorite Christmas movie? I’m more of a Christmas special kind of gal (“Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, etc.), but I do like “The Santa Clause” and “A Christmas Story”.
- When do you start shopping for Christmas? Gosh, probably June or July – whenever I see something I know the kids will like. The only one I’m always still trying to shop for in December is my husband!
- Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Probably.
- Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Baklava (when my mother makes it!), candy cane cookies, and turtle cookies.
- Clear lights or colored on the tree? Colored (we have clear on the outside).
- Favorite Christmas song? Silver Bells
- Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? Of course!
- Angel on the tree top or a star? Star (a hand-made paper one made by my son. We used to have a gorgeous angel tree-topper, but then we got a tree that was too tall to put it on.)
- Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas morning, but we sometimes open one on Christmas Eve.
- Candy canes? Well, for some reason we always have some hanging on the tree, but no one actually eats them!
- What I love most about Christmas? The kids’ excitement, being with family, watching Christmas specials, eating lots of goodies, and Christmas music.
- What is your favorite holiday tradition? Opening stockings first (in which everything is wrapped!), then going into the playroom, where the tree is, to open presents.
- Does Santa wrap presents or just put them under the tree? He wraps them and puts them under the tree.
- Do you hang mistletoe? No.
- Travel at Christmas or stay home? We usually travel Christmas Eve, and try to stay home Christmas Day.
- When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? My fifth-grade teacher…the wretch.
- How do you decorate your Christmas tree? We use colored lights, silver tinsel garland, and an assortment of ornaments we've collected through the years. We’ve got so many ornaments that we can’t even put half of them on the tree!
- Snow - Love it or dread it? Would love it on Christmas Eve/Christmas Day. Beyond that, I could definitely do without.
- Can you ice skate? Kinda-sorta…not really. I used to skate all the time when I was a kid…a very long time ago!
- Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Definitely giving. But, hey, receiving can be pretty cool, too.
