Christmas Card Do-Over

The holidays are over - I hope everyone had a wonderful one! I received lots of beautiful Christmas cards this year - I love getting cards in the mail! There was one in particular, from my mother & father-in-law, that when I saw it, my first thought was, "I could do that!" Have you ever seen something in a store - a card, or article of clothing, or home decor item - and you've found yourself thinking that you could do that yourself? Well, that's what we're going to do today - a Christmas card do-over. Let's start by seeing the original card:

Isn't that pretty? And pretty simple when you really look at it. The first thing I needed to do was choose my papers. I really like Close To My Heart's "Mistletoe" paper pack, so I decided I would use that:

Here are the three papers I chose to use. The one on the left will be the small tree, the one in the middle will be the card's base, and the one on the right will be the striped paper that the trees are mounted to. Now, in order to create the main tree image with the star, I chose to use a flourish stamp and the clear embossing resist technique. This is how it worked:

First, I needed to create a mask for my tree shape.

After I had the mask cut out of regular copy paper, I placed a piece of light green cardstock behind it (in this case, Sweet Leaf from CTMH):

Next, I used an embossing ink and stamped my flourish image onto the green cardstock through the mask. This way, the image would be imprinted only on my tree shape, making it easier to trim out later:

After stamping the image, cover it with clear embossing powder and heat emboss:

Now, in order to get the light green swirls on a dark green background, I used a sponge and New England Ivy ink and sponged over the entire image:

When you're done it should look like this:

You can add as much or as little ink as you like - I actually decided that the green was not dark enough, so I went back with some Olive ink as well to try & darken it up a bit. When you're done inking, wipe over the image with a paper towel to pick up any ink that may be on the clear embossing. The embossing resists the ink, letting the cardstock underneath show through. Now you will trim the embossed triangle out.

The next step will be to create the border/mount for the embossed tree. In order to do that, I took my original mask and traced it very lightly onto a piece of Colonial White cardstock, being sure to leave room at the top for the star. I stamped a star image with embossing ink and embossed the image with gold embossing powder:

Now you can trim around the traced outline and the star, leaving about 1/8" around, then erase the outline:

The embossed tree can then be adhered to the middle of this piece:

The second, smaller tree is a simple trim from patterned paper. In order to make it look more like the original, I drew in some dots around the circles with a gold glitter pen. The next piece will be the striped background. The original had a thin gold stripe around the entire border, plus a white scalloped border inside of that. I was able to use a dot border stamp I had and heat emboss the top half of it with white embossing powder to achieve the same look:

Once that was done, all that was left to do was assemble the pieces. Unbelieveably enough, I do not own any gold ribbon, so I used the closest thing I had which was Buttercup ribbon from CTMH. And instead of embossing a sentiment at the bottom of the card, I hand-wrote one with my gold glitter pen. Here is the final result:

Not too shabby, if I do say so myself! When you find yourself thinking, "I can do that" - try it! You may find that you have hidden duplication talents you never knew you had!

30 Random Christmas Questions

The following was posted in the Scrap Girls Newsletter for Monday, December 6, 2010, by Brandie Valenzuela. The responses to the questions have been changed, by me, to reflect my answers, instead of Brandie’s. Feel free to post your answers on my, or your own blog as well!

“Every so often, I get "tagged" to respond to a series of questions about myself. The person who sends it to me has their answers in it, and the instructions tell me to copy and paste the questions, remove their answers, and give my own answers.

I enjoy doing these, so I save them for when I have some spare time. Below are some Christmas questions that were recently sent to me, so I thought this would be a perfect time to answer them for the Scrap Girls Newsletter.”
  1. Real tree or artificial? Artificial. We tried real for a few years, but finally decided it wasn't worth the trouble... or the mess.
  1. When do you put up your tree and decorations? Usually the first weekend in December.
  1. When do you take the tree down? Roundabout the weekend after New Years.
  1. Eggnog or Hot Chocolate? Hot chocolate, definitely.
  1. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail.
  1. Favorite gift received as a child? That’s a tough one, being that I only remember what I’ve seen in old home movies. So I guess I will say a 3-story Barbie Townhouse.
  1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? If it can be wrapped, I’ll wrap it. If it’s just too awkward, or I don’t have a box to fit it, I’ll use a bag.
  1. Do you have a nativity scene? Yes – a porcelain one from Home Interiors that’s very special to me.
  1. Hardest person to buy for? My brother.
  1. Easiest person to buy for? My daughter.
  1. Favorite Christmas movie? I’m more of a Christmas special kind of gal (“Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, etc.), but I do like “The Santa Clause” and “A Christmas Story”.
  1. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Gosh, probably June or July – whenever I see something I know the kids will like. The only one I’m always still trying to shop for in December is my husband!
  1. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Probably.
  1. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Baklava (when my mother makes it!), candy cane cookies, and turtle cookies.
  1. Clear lights or colored on the tree? Colored (we have clear on the outside).
  1. Favorite Christmas song? Silver Bells
  1. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? Of course!
  1. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star (a hand-made paper one made by my son. We used to have a gorgeous angel tree-topper, but then we got a tree that was too tall to put it on.)
  1. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas morning, but we sometimes open one on Christmas Eve.
  1. Candy canes? Well, for some reason we always have some hanging on the tree, but no one actually eats them!
  1. What I love most about Christmas? The kids’ excitement, being with family, watching Christmas specials, eating lots of goodies, and Christmas music.
  1. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Opening stockings first (in which everything is wrapped!), then going into the playroom, where the tree is, to open presents.
  1. Does Santa wrap presents or just put them under the tree? He wraps them and puts them under the tree.
  1. Do you hang mistletoe? No.
  1. Travel at Christmas or stay home? We usually travel Christmas Eve, and try to stay home Christmas Day.
  1. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? My fifth-grade teacher…the wretch.
  1. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? We use colored lights, silver tinsel garland, and an assortment of ornaments we've collected through the years. We’ve got so many ornaments that we can’t even put half of them on the tree!
  1. Snow - Love it or dread it? Would love it on Christmas Eve/Christmas Day. Beyond that, I could definitely do without.
  1. Can you ice skate? Kinda-sorta…not really. I used to skate all the time when I was a kid…a very long time ago!
  1. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Definitely giving. But, hey, receiving can be pretty cool, too.

It's That Time of Year Again!

Thanksgiving is just two days away! For most people in the United States, Thanksgiving is a time when families come together - but with so much going on, it's easy to miss some photo opportunities and not realize it until it's time to scrap your photos. Use the questions below (as posted on the CK Club Blog, Thursday, November 18, 2010 by CK Erin Weed) to come up with your own Thanksgiving shot list.
1.       Did your children create any fun Thanksgiving projects at school?
2.       How are your kids entertaining themselves while waiting for the big meal?
3.       Are your children helpful in the kitchen? Or are they sneaking little bites of food?
4.       What is your child's favorite part of the meal?
5.       What are the kids up after dinner?
6.       How do you cook a turkey in your family?
7.       What time do you have to get up on Thanksgiving to get the turkey in the oven?
8.       Who gets to carve the turkey?
9.       Do you have any nontraditional items on the menu?
10.   Do you have any special recipes that always make their way to the Thanksgiving table?
11.   What is your favorite side dish?
12.   Who all helped to prepare the meal? Did guests bring certain dishes?
13.   Do your kids have lots of cousins, and did any visit for Thanksgiving?
14.   Do the guys help with preparing the meal at your house? Or are they busy watching football?
15.   Is there someone in the family who is a great pie maker?
16.   Do you serve other desserts besides pie?
17.   Do you have special china you use for the meal?
18.   How did you decide on what to use for your tablescape/centerpiece?
19.   What's the weather like this year on Thanksgiving?
20.   Where did you celebrate Thanksgiving?
21.   Who did you spend the holiday with, friends or family?
22.   Do you have any fun Thanksgiving traditions?

"Ask The Masters" - Part 4

Today's installment of "Ask The Masters" addresses some digital effects that you can use to really make your photos and scrapbook pages unique. You can use these techniques whether you are a digital scrapbooker or a paper scrapbooker - or a little bit of both! If you are a paper scrapper, you can apply these techniques to your photos before printing them out and using them on your paper layouts. So, here's the question:

"What are three way-cool digital photo effects?"

The first effect is given to us by Memory Maker Master Jessica Sprague. She suggests using spot color. Adding spot color can be subtle or dramatic. In order to create this effect, create a duplicate layer of your color photo and change it to black & white. Making sure the black & white version is on top, and you are working on that layer, use a small, soft eraser brush to erase the parts of the photo you would like to spot color. By erasing the black & white image, you allow the color from the layer beneath to show through. When you are done, merge the two layers and print your photo.

I used this technique in the following photos of my kids carving pumpkins. The original photos had all sorts of other colors that completely clashed with the papers I wanted to use, so this technique was perfect for toning down the photo colors, but still making the pictures pop!

I just LOVE this technique!!

The second effect suggested, by Kelli Noto, is to use a soft blur. There are many different ways of achieving this effect on your photos. Kelli used a soft light photo action to create a "dreamy feel" to her photo. I achieved the same effect using the "Diffuse Glow" filter in Photoshop Elements. I have shown what the photo looked like before I applied the filter, and then the result after. I just LOVE the dreamy feel it gives this photo of the Bridge of Sighs in Venice, Italy.

And lastly, Jenn Brookover recommends using a digital border to draw attention to your focal photo. This is a fun technique, and there are SO MANY digital borders out there to play with! Here is a layout I did where I used a digital border to emphasize my photo (this entire layout was done digitally, but you can create the same effect with paper):

"Ask The Masters" - Part 3

Continuing with our "Ask the Masters" series, and our focus on photography, here is the next question answered by Memory Makers Masters:

"When it comes to capturing candids, subtlety is not exactly my strong suit. How can I snap photos on the sly?"

Kelli Noto has this to say: Shoot From Afar: "I feel like the paparazzi, stalking my kids with a zoom lens!" With a telephoto or zoom lens, you can capture the moment and still be pretty far from the action, making your presence virtually unknown. I was able to capture this photo of my son in the water from way up on the beach. He had no idea I was taking his picture:

Susan Weinroth suggests to Get Behind the Action: "With respect to people's hang-ups about their backsides, photos taken from this perspective can capture poignant moments of emotion. From behind, you can capture linked arms, touching heads, facial profiles engaged in eye contact." This is one of my favorite photos from our trip to the beach...shot from behind without anyone being the wiser:

Lastly, Suzy Plantamura recommends to Focus First and Wait:  "The trick: anticipate the area of action, focus your camera on that spot and...wait with a ready trigger finger." When trying this on your own children, Suzy advises, "Just take the picture before they have time to respond." This photo was taken while my daughter enjoyed the wind at the beach. Not only will being ready for the shot help you get it, but taking many photos in succession will also up your chances of getting the perfect candid:

Come back next time when we'll be showing you three cool digital photo effects to make your pictures shine!

"Ask The Masters" - Part 2

In this second installment of "Ask the Masters", the Memory Makers Masters are addressing this question - "Seriously, I'm sick of the groaning involved with taking group shots. How can I make it more fun for everyone (myself included)?"

Well, if you're going to have great-looking scrapbooks, you want to start with great-looking photos, right? Here's what Kelly Goree has to say:

"Don't Pose Them: Who says faces in a group shot need to be staring directly at the camera with perfect grins? For many group shots, that is darn near impossible, especially when photographing small children." Unposed shots can show spunk & personality.

This is one of my favorite shots of my kids, and they weren't even looking at the camera:

And Diana Hudson suggests:

"Angle the Shot: OK, so this really might not make it more fun for those in the photo (promises of candy or money usually works), but it will lend a cool perspective to your shot!" A change in perspective might be just what your photo needs. Try shooting your group from above, from one side, or even from the ground up. You'll be amazed at the differences!

I had my kids lay on the floor for this photo:
Happy shooting!
